On Friday, October 7, 2022, at approximately 1800 hours, Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff's Department responded to the storage units in Maquon, located at 105 E 3rd St, for a complaint of a suspicious odor.  Upon arriving, Deputies met with the manager of the storage facility and the owner of the storage unit where the smell was coming from.  The owner of the unit, unlocked and opened the unit for Deputies, but said the smell was from an opossum that had died in the unit.

Located inside the unit was a large box, which the owner was asked to open the box.  The owner then advised there was a body inside the box.  Investigators were called as well as Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations.  After a search warrant was obtained, the unit was entered and the box opened.  Inside the box was decomposed human remains.  Identification was not able to be made on scene do to the condition of the body.

The owner of the storage unit was detained and later taken to St Mary's Hospital for medical reasons.  Due to medical conditions no charges have been filed at this time.  Charges are pending upon results of the investigation.

Names of those involved are being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.  More details will be released at a later time.
