The Knox County Sheriff's Office's Merit Commission has amended the Merit Rules regarding Hiring Requirements, Applications, Examinations and Testing.

 

Volunteer Auxiliary Deputy Program

The Knox County Sheriff's Office maintains a Volunteer Auxiliary Deputy Program to enhance public safety and provide supplemental support to the agency during routine operations, community events, and emergency situations.

Program Purpose

Auxiliary Deputies serve under the direction and authority of the Sheriff. While not full-time sworn deputies, they are trained volunteers who assist with a variety of functions to ensure the continued safety and security of Knox County residents.

General Duties

Auxiliary Deputies may be assigned to duties including, but not limited to:

  • Traffic direction and control during parades, fairs, and other community events

  • Assistance during natural disasters, emergencies, or search and rescue operations

  • Crowd management and security at public gatherings

  • Support at accident scenes or during periods of increased demand for law enforcement services

Auxiliary Deputies shall not carry firearms or exercise law enforcement authority except as specifically authorized by the Sheriff and in compliance with state law.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

 

  • Must be a Knox County resident 
  • Twenty-one (21) years of age or older

  • Possession of a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card

  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check

Conditions of Service

This position is strictly voluntary and does not provide financial compensation. Auxiliary Deputies may be reimbursed for approved expenses in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy. Volunteers must comply with all applicable training requirements, operational procedures, and standards of conduct as established by the Sheriff.
